How do You Dig Proof Your Rabbit Run and Enclosure?

Animals digging into or out of your rabbit enclosure will do so around the perimeter of the run. There are a few ways of fortifying the perimeters to make this more difficult.

Paving Stones

The simplest defence is to place a line of paving stones around the perimeters of your run. You could place the stones inside the run, to prevent digging out. You could place them outside the run, to prevent digging in. You could also place paving stones on both sides of the run.

Chicken Wire Canopy

Another way to fortify the perimeters is with a barrier of chicken wire.

• First, cut several lengths of chicken wire, one for each wall of your run. They should measure a little bit longer than the length of the wall.
• Next, fold the wire to a 90-degree angle.
• Finally, place the L-shaped barrier against the wall of the hutch, securing it to the run with nails or zip ties, and to the ground with ground netting spikes. When you’re done, the horizontal part of the “L” should lay on the ground, forming a canopy around the perimeter of your run.

Again, you can do this on the inside of the hutch, the outside, or both.

Bury the Wire

Alternately, you can bury your chicken wire.

First, dig a channel 10 to 12 inches deep around the perimeters of your run. Now, stand the wire vertically in the ditch, and replace the turf. Secure the wire to the walls of the run.

Another method is to secure your run to a concrete slab or channel.
