Choosing the right cage for your rabbits will be one of the single most important decisions you make. After all, rabbits have a lifespan of approximately ten years. And as a responsible pet owner, you want yours to be as healthy, happy and hoppy as possible.
Treat your rabbits like teenagers.
A rabbit hutch should be treated like a teenager's bedroom, be used to eat, sleep and hang about in, but all the real fun happens once they’re outside. In other words, the hutch should be full of lovely food, fresh bedding and plenty of toys to keep them occupied but is still only a small part of their living environment.
A Hutch Is Not Enough
According to the Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund, a shocking number of rabbits are kept in hutches that are too small. Their message is simple, a hutch is not enough.
While it is recommended that rabbits should be able to hop (not step) at least three times and lie fully stretched in their enclosure. Any hutch, regardless of its size is for times when you are out, busy with other things or over-night accommodation only.
Why You Should Have More Than One Rabbit
How animals live in their natural habitat is a good indicator of how they should be housed as pets. In the wild, rabbits are at their happiest in a large group (or fluffle) which means it’s better to have two or more. Confining a single bunny to a small cage without room to move is not only unacceptable, but it is also cruel.
The Right Size Hutch for One, Two or Three Rabbits
Given that rabbits can cover as much as three miles in a day, no wonder they get depressed and irritable being cooped up all day. Below are the recommended cage sizes for one, two or three rabbits.
We recommend that you always try and create the largest living environment for your pets that you can.
One Rabbit? - How much space do you need?
Although we wouldn't recommend keeping a bunny on its own because they get lonely, the cage should be big enough for it to hop three times uninterrupted, comfortably stretch out when lying down and stand up without its ears touching the top of the cage.
Our 4ft and 5ft Hutches and Runs would be suitable for one rabbit.
Two rabbits? - How much space do you need?
Bigger is always better when it comes to a home for your bunnies. For two rabbits we recommend the 5ft and 6ft range of Rabbit Hutches and Runs.
Three rabbits? - How much space do you need?
If you are housing three rabbits, choose at least a 6ft Double Hutch and Run or a This will give them enough room where they can play, eat and sleep. If space is somewhat limited, you could always get a double-story hutch.
